What can we expect from Prime Day 2018?

The fourth Amazon Prime Day is fast approaching and this year it will consist of 36 hours worth of deals (from 12pm 16 July until the end of 17 July), up from 30 hours in 2017. The event, extended to four new countries (Australia, Singapore, Netherlands and Luxembourg), will see more than a million products being discounted worldwide.

One of the main objectives of Prime Day is to boost the number of Prime subscribers, who are known to spend around twice as much in a year compared to regular shoppers (Business Insider, 2017). Prime Day 2017 was a success; not only did it lead to more Prime sign-ups than on any previous day, but also it surpassed Black Friday and Cyber Monday record sales (Retail Gazette, 2017).

Similar to last year, Amazon is also taking this opportunity to increase the number of subscribers to its other membership services, such as Prime Video Channels and Amazon Music. Such deals are mainly targeted at existing Prime members, who can enjoy a number of other deals in advance of Prime Day, like the one below.

Of all the deals available on Prime Day last year, the Amazon Echo Dot was the most selling item. Brand View real-time analysis on Prime Day 2017 revealed that the Amazon Echo Dot was being sold at its lowest price since launching and this year Amazon has announced that “Prime Day will feature double the deals on Amazon devices—and the biggest deals yet on Alexa-enabled products like Echo, Fire TV and Fire tablets” (Amazon, 2018).

In addition, Amazon has revealed that Prime Day is coming back with a number of novelties, including Prime Day Launches: exclusive products from numerous brands available to Prime members for a limited period of time. In the days leading to the main event, the dedicated page included a number of earphones, headphones, clothing, jewellery, and technology items available to pre-order.

Will Prime Day 2018 be the biggest yet? We predict yes. A longer sale period, more deals, more countries and more Amazon exclusives have already created a huge buzz with UK shoppers and we expect even greater success for Amazon this year.
